Sidewalk Safety

Proposal: To establish the location of sidewalks along FM2410 to ensure the safety of students at Harker Heights High School while walking to and from school.
Supplies:
GPS, Tape Measure, GIS Program, Map of FM2410 on disk, Digital Camera
People Needed:
6-8 Students, 1 Teacher supervisor, City Engineer (contact only)
Procedure:
Contact City Engineer and see if city codes demand sidewalks of certain width, certain segmen size, distance from side of raod, etc.
Acquaint students with use of GPS
Working in groups of 3-4, students should start at opposite ends of the proposed sidewalk and work toward each other.
Readings on GPS should be taken at approximatel every 25 paces.
Students with tape measures should determine that sufficient area is available for the sidewalks to fit. Any problems should be noted with GPS reading to aid City Engineer's planning for the sidewalks.
One student should use the digital camera to record the procedure.
Students should plot the sidewalk using the GIS program.
Students should submit plan to the city of Harker Heights.
