BellNET has initiated a Cemetery Database Project for K12 students in Bell county. Students will research and study the history, geography, and societal impact of Bell County through an organized and systematic process of fieldwork and data collection. Students within secondary institutions will verify cemetery locations, implement a deceased population census, and contribute to a centralized database for public information.
Teachers will be recruited from all secondary institutions. Outreach will also be made to private educational institutions, home schooling units, and special populations to implement this project. No teacher or student will be omitted from participating because of race, gender, age, or handicapped ability. Teachers will be trained on the use of field equipment and appropriate use of the accumulated resources. Teachers will, in turn, submit age-appropriate curriculum for inclusion within a designated web site. These curriculum modules should carry a strong theme of integrity and ethical behavior that is critically necessary component for all work sites. This foundational behavior will be reinforced through electronic mentoring provided by members of the Bell County Historical Commission. Directly relevant to the foundation skills of integrity and ethical behavior are the state and federal agency guidelines and procedures that directly relate to cemeteries.
Learning objectives associated with this project are:
To instill a comprehensive respect in students for historical legacy through the field exploration of local cemeteries.
To encourage classroom research in the legal documentation attached to cemeteries, historical conservation and human interment.
To strengthen teacher and student confidence in the use of technology through hands-on field and classroom application.
Deliverables
Teacher training will focus on the use of field equipment, which consists of using a digital camera, a global positioning system, and an extended laptop for field data collection. Each participating teacher will develop age appropriate curriculum for use in the classroom that defines a research project identified jointly by the teacher and classroom students. Classroom students will complete field data collection on identified cemeteries. Classrooms will be assigned cemeteries within close proximity to their schools, thus providing a geographically close field opportunity for student work. Specific tasks will include exact location confirmation of the cemetery through GIS and a comprehensive census of markers. Collected data will be compiled into a centralized database for public access and dissemination.
Are any Bell County veterans listed in the USCWC?
This evaluation will utilize both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis. The following questions will assist in the evaluation process:
Data will be reported by project and in aggregate fashion at the conclusion of the study.
