A Horse of Course

Summary: Students will discover the important role horses play in agriculture today and in America's past. Students will explore everything about horses from how they are raised to how much it costs to have a horse.

Connection to the Curriculum: This module allows students to learn more about their world and the animals that live there.  It also provides opportunity to explore America’s history.

TEKS Alignment: Science 1.1 A, 1.6 B, 1.9 A Math 1.3 B, 1 .7 A

Time: Four one hour class sessions, one four hour field based instruction

Season: Spring

Materials:
Bus transportation
Various horse feed
Computer access
Reference books on horses
Horse blanket
Saddle
Hay

Objectives:

 Procedures:

1. Students research the role horses played in America's history.

2. Students generate a list of questions they have about raising horses.

3. Guest speakers present information about raising horses and the cost.

4. Students decide on a site to visit.

5. Students participate in a field-based instruction to a horse site.

6. Students reflect upon the information gathered at the site.

7. Students create a visual display on the impor1ance of horses.

 Questions:

When did horses arrive in America?

What role did they play in helping people in the past?

Estimate how much it would cost to raise a horse.

Elaborate on what all is needed to care for a horse.

Evaluation:

The teacher will critique the visual-display to see that it covers the past and present of horses in America. The teacher

will also make sure the display conveys Information on raising horses and cost.

Expanding the Lesson:

Horses used in therapy for disabled persons.

Other animals used in agriculture.
